United States Proposes New Rules for Infant Sleep Products

Currently, there are no mandatory standards  for infant sleep products in the United States. That is why the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a safety rule for infant sleep products for infants up to 5 months in response to the high mortality rates of infants related to infant sleep products. The new federal safety rule combines requirements from the voluntary standard developed by ASTM International. Nevertheless, in some cases these requirements become more stringent to provide the safety of infant’s lives. The rule is going to be effective from the middle of 2022. Thus, new products must have an angle of the sleep surface 10 degrees or lower and should be tested to show the compliance of the CPSC standard for bassinets and cradles and need to obtain Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) certified that the product complies with the standard and the additional requirements.

According to the rule, the  “infant sleep product” is defined as “a product marketed or intended to provide sleeping accommodation for an infant up to 5 months of age".

The Safety Standard for Infant Sleep Products is applicable to:

  • Accessories
  • Compact infant sleep products
  • New-born sleep products
