United States Decides to Keep Care Labeling Rule

The GMA Consult Group informs our Subscribers that the decision of the U.S. Federation Trade Commission (FTC) on the repealing of the Care Labeling Rule is withdrawn.

The Rule was established in 1971 and was systematically reviewed to provide the relevant information for the buyers. It obligates manufacturers and importers to attach labels with care instructions for garments and certain goods, providing instructions for dry cleaning or washing, bleaching, drying and ironing clothing. Thus, in July 2020 the FTC announced a possible repeal of that rule.

After this announcement, the FTC received hundreds of comments not only from the customers but from the apparel manufacturing and cleaning industries where they indicate that removing the labels might lead to damage to the product during the wash or ironing that сфт can lead to unnecessary liability of the business.

Based on that comments, the FTC has come to the conclusion that the Care Labeling Rule continues to be an important tool for consumers, manufacturers, retailers, designers and dry cleaners as well as for the buyers through the support in extending the life of the clothing.

In this regard, the FTC announced the withdrawal of the initial decision on the Care Labeling Rule repealing in the end of July 2021.
