Thailand Implements New Standards for Lamps

The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) released two standards on safety of lamps:

  1. TIS 2779-2562 “Double-capped LED lamps designed to retrofit linear fluorescent lamps - Safety specifications”
  2. TIS 2780-2562 “Self-ballasted LED-lamps for general lighting services by voltage >50 V - Safety specifications”

TIS 2779-2562 is identical to IEC 62776:2014+Cor1:2015 and applies to double-capped LED lamps with G5 and G13 caps, intended to replace fluorescent lamps with the same caps, having:

- a rated power up to 125 W
- a rated voltage up to 250 V

TIS 2780-2562 is harmonized with IEC 62560:2011+AMD1:2015 and applies to self-ballasted LED-lamps, intended for domestic and similar general lighting purposes, and have:

– a rated wattage up to 60 W
– a rated voltage of > 50 V up to 250 V

Both standards specify general safety and testing requirements as well as specific requirements such as:

  • marking requirements
  • interchangeability requirements
  • pin-safety during insertion
  • protection against accidental contact with live parts
  • mechanical requirements for caps
  • resistance to heat, flame and ignition
  • fault conditions, etc.

Although, TIS 2780-2562 and TIS 2780-2562 were developed in 2019, the Thai Ministry of Industry approved them not long ago. That is why provisions of these standards become mandatory only from March 29, 2022.
