The Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan informed on changes in labeling requirements for textile products. It derives from approval of new revision of national industrial standard JIS L0204-2 “Textile Term (Raw Material Division) - Part 2: Chemical Fiber". The changes concern material composition labeling revision with regard to textiles that contain polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers. According to the JIS L0204-2 textiles that contain polyacrylonitrile synthetic fiber with a mass ratio of acrylonitrile not less than 85% should be indicated in the label as “acrylic” and textile that contains polyacrylonitrile synthetic fiber but a mass ratio of acrylonitrile less than 85% should be indicated in the label as “Modacrylic”.
Please, note that revision of the standard became effective from January 1, 2022. However, the government of Japan gave a transition period to prepare for the new requirements. The period ends on December 31, 2022. It means that starting from January 1, 2023 textiles that contain polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers must be indicated properly.
The requirements do not concern products that have already been put to the market.
