India Launches Phase II Certification Procedure for Telecommunication Devices

In India, the testing and certification procedure of telecommunication equipment is governed by the Indian Telegraph (Amendment) Rules, 2017. According to these rules, every telecom equipment must fall under mandatory testing and certification procedure prior to being sold, imported or used in India. The TEC certificates can be issued only based on test results issued by Indian Accredited labs.

Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), New Delhi, under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a set of essential requirements and notifications to implement the statements of the Indian Telegraph (Amendment) Rules.

First of all, the detailed procedure for Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipments (MTCTE) was issued along with essential requirements to some categories of products covered under Phase I.

Recently, the TEC notified about the launch of Phase II of the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipments. It announced that within the phase the following equipment falls under the MTCTE procedure:

  • Transmission terminal equipment (SDH Equipment, Multiplexing Equipment)
  • PON family of Broadband Equipment (PON ONT, PON ONU, and PON OLT)
  • Feedback Devices

Please note that it is possible to apply for the MTCTE procedure for the above-mentioned devices starting from June 25, 2020. However, the certificates for this equipment become valid from October 1, 2020.
