Nowadays, wireless technologies are a corporate part of our own life. Most people have mobile phones, smartwatches or fitness trackers, laptops, and tablets. For children, a lot of wireless toys are presented on the markets. Recent research has shown a big problem with cybersecurity of wireless devices. With this regard, the European Commission developed a delegated act to the Radio equipment directive RED (2014/53/EU) to protect consumer’ lives from cyber threats.
The delegated act aims to make manufacturers set up features for the devices that will:
The delegated act is going to be supplemented by a Cyber Resilience Act. Moreover, the European Standardization Organization should establish a range of standards with regard to cybersecurity topics that help manufacturers to comply with the new requirements.
The Commission plans to enforce the delegated act in a two-month examination period in case there are no objections from the Council and Parliament side.
Transition period of 30 months will also be given to manufacturers to prepare for the new requirements. Thus, the secured devices become available on the EU market approximately in the middle of 2024.
