EU Implements New Energy Efficiency Requirements for Some Categories of Refrigerating Appliances

The EU Commission published two new Commission Regulations on refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function in October 2019. The first Regulation 2019/2024 concerns ecodesign requirements. The second one is Commission Regulations 2019/2018 for energy labelling.

Both Regulations became completely effective from March 1, 2021. They apply to electric mains-operated refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function, including appliances sold for refrigeration of items other than foodstuffs.

The Commission Regulation 2019/2024 contains three types of the ecodesign requirements:

  • Energy efficiency requirements
  • Resource efficiency requirements
  • Information requirements

With regard to energy efficiency requirements, please note that the values of the maximum energy efficiency index (EEI) of refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function that are effective from March 2021 will be tougher from September 2023 as the follows:

The Commission Regulation 2019/2018 on energy labelling of refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function establishes energy efficiency classes and energy labelling for refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function:

The label should have the following design:

Label for refrigeration appliances with a direct sales function, except for beverage coolers and ice-cream freezers

Label for beverage coolers

Label for ice-cream freezers
