E-call System Becomes Mandatory in UAE from 2021

The GMA Consult Group reminds our subscribers that all new vehicle models produced in 2021 must have an E-Call system according to the UAE.S 5019:2018 standard requirements.

The requirements of the standard are applicable to vehicles that not exceed 3.5 tons, are constructed for the carriage of passengers, and contain a maximum of eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat.

However, if it is produced less than 75 vehicles annually, the E-call requirements are not applicable to this volume of vehicle models. In this case, manufacturers only need to apply for an ESMA certificate of conformity against the UAE regulation requirements.

Vehicles with the E-call system must be approved by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and then by the Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO). Thus, vehicle manufacturers must have a type approval certificate for the E-Call system from the TRA and Gulf Conformity Certificate for vehicles with the E-Call system. It is necessary to have two above-mentioned certificates to get access to the market.

Please, note that to get a TRA certificate the E-Call system must meet not only UAE.S 5019:2018 requirements but also standards related to Electrical safety (such as EN 60950-1 or EN 62368), EMC requirements (EN 301 489), and  R&TTE requirements (EN 300 328/EN 301 511/EN 301 908-1/EN 301 908-2, etc.)
