China Updates Standard for Footwear Shanks

The GMA Consult Group would like to remind our subscribers that an updated version of the standard on shanks for footwear will become effective in China from March 2022. The GB/T 28011-2011 will be superseded with GB/T 28011-2021 and manufacturers of footwear should pay attention to the changes.

Thus, the standard applies to metal and non-metal shanks for shoes of size 200 and above. Note that it is not applicable to shanks made from wood or similar materials.

In the new version, the classification of shanks has been changed a bit. According to the standard, the classification of shanks can be based on its shape:

  • I-type
  • L-type
  • Y-type

The definition of each type is stated in the new version of the standard as well. In the latest version, there is a requirement to the length of these types of shanks.  Please, note that it becomes necessary to mark the suitable effective heel height or range of the effective suitable heel heights on the shank. Moreover, the GB/T 28011-2021 specifies requirements to visual quality, exemplarily, the surface of shank should be glib, without cracks, burr, rust in other words. Furthermore, some measurable parameters became stricter.
