China Revises Standards for Footwear

State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) together with the Standardization Administration Committee of the People’s Republic of China (SAC) recently released a batch of important national standards covering 450 voluntary national standards.

Among these standards, there are two standards on footwear that establish safety technical specification requirements for infants and children footwear and safety requirements for adults footwear.

Safety technical specifications for infant and children footwear contains requirements to physical performances of shoes such as accessible sharp elements, small part hazards of infant shoes and chemical substances restriction including heavy metals, dimethyl fumarate, chlorinated phenols, N-nitrosamine, formaldehyde.

The safety requirements for adults footwear concerns using and control of key chemical substances such as heavy metals, formaldehyde, chlorinated paraffins, N-nitrosamine, etc.

The standards are planned to be effective in 24 months after the release date of the standards. However, the transition period will give time for manufacturers to prepare for the new version of standards.
