China Releases New Standard for Swimwear

According to statistics, more than 200,000 children under the age of 14 die in China every year due to accidental injuries, and one of the main reasons is drowning death. In order to solve the problem of accidental injuries of children in the water, the textile and apparel industry created baby buoyancy swimsuits that were put to the chinese market and suitable for children who are beginners in swimming.

Baby buoyancy swimwear is different from traditional swimwear designs, and it is also significantly different from life jackets. That is why there are no relevant national or industry standards that help to control quality and safety of such products. In this regard, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China together with the Standardization Administration of China has developed GB/T 40180-2021 “Buoyant swimwear for infants and children”. The standard can promote the standardization of baby buoyancy swimwear production, improve product quality and safety level and market competitiveness as well as protect the interests of consumers.

The standard applies for buoyancy swimwear whose shells are made of textile materials and worn by infants and children ages 14 years or below. Please note, it is not applicable for such products as lifejackets and buoyancy aids with plastic as the main material that are covered by other regulatory documents.

The buoyant swimwear is understood to be a wearable clothing that uses textile fabrics as the main shells and is equipped with buoyancy materials and/or inflatable air chambers to provide floatation required for water sports.

The standard contains warning and information requirements as well as safety and quality requirements.

The standard became effective from December 1, 2021.
