China Is Developing Rules for Internet Market Control

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in Guangzhou issued draft rules including anti-monopoly measures that would help to make the Chinese internet market more clear and fair.

The Rules are aimed at the following:

  • Prevent market from false data
  • Allow consumer to see both negative and positive comments
  • Stop traffic hijacking when companies try to redirect a user to their own website or service while they’re browsing another
  • Prevent operators from gathering competitors’ trading information by using special algorithms

The SAMR says that it is ready to carry out the surveillance by hiring third-party institutions for the audit purposes.

The draft rules are open for public comments up to September 15, 2021.

The Chinese regulator is also taking actions against the monopoly of China’s technology giants. Among them are such companies as:

  • Alibaba (multinational technology company specializing in e-commerce, retail, Internet, and technology)
  • Meituan (food delivery company)
  • Tencent (internet and technology company)
