Australia Updates Safety Regulations on Products Containing Button or Coin Batteries

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standard 2020 to reduce the risk of hazard death and injury connected with the use of button/coin batteries, as these items can be swallowed by children and become the reason of injury or even death.

The provisions of this standard become mandatory from June 22, 2022. It means that button/coin batteries or products that contain such batteries must follow this standard to get access to the market of Australia.

However, if products were first supplied to a consumer before the requirements became mandatory or products were supplied in a one‑off transaction by a supplier who had bought the products as a consumer, such production is not subject to this standard.

Requirements of this standard concerns warning signs that must be put to the product, instruction, and package (if any) to inform consumers that the product contains items that can cause serious injuries if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body.

The standard itself you can find here.
