USA Firms up Safety Requirements for Infant Swings

An infant swing is a stationary unit that consists of a frame and powered mechanism that enables an infant to swing while seating. It is intended for infants from birth until a child is able to sit up unassisted. To minimize the risk of death and injuries associated with the use of swings, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved the mandatory standard for Infant Swings by presenting it in the code of federal regulation (CFR), namely 16 CFR part 1223. It is a common practice that the requirements of mandatory standards indicated in the CFR, correspond to the relevant voluntary ASTM standards.

The Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Swings contains requirements to the infants swing construction in general and the operation process, among them requirements to restraints, seat angles, electrical components, and unintentional folding.

Recently, the CPSC has updated the mandatory safety requirements for Infant Swings by including reference to the ASTM F2088-21. The F2088-21 version contains new warning language for battery-operated products and additional editorial warning language revisions.

This Direct Final Rule is going to become effective from January 29, 2022.
