A standard (French: Norme, German: Norm) is a technical document designed to be used as a rule, guideline or definition. It is a consensus-built, repeatable way of doing something (CEN).

The World Standards Day was celebrated on October 14th. The aim of World Standards Day is to show the importance of Standards for the global economy.

Standards were crucial during the First Industrial Revolution, in the fourth industrial revolution they will play the same role. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres, collectively referred to as cyber-physical systems.

Standards lead to fast transition to a new era – innovators worldwide rely on International Standards, which are produced by IEC, ISO and ITU. The Fourth Industrial Revolution brought us new technologies and trends such as robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, the Internet of Things, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), fifth-generation wireless technologies (5G), additive manufacturing/3D printing and fully autonomous vehicles.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has begun and will change the way we make goods from our personal to professional use. Standards are a powerful way to ensure safety and minimize risk of new developments.
