South Korea Issues Amendments for Unlicensed Radio Equipment

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) of South Korea has amended Technical Standards for Unlicensed Radio Equipment by issuing the relevant Notice at the end of December, 2022.

The amendments concern requirements to additional functions that manufacturers can develop in the portable devices by using Ultra-wideband technologies that are ideal for high-precision and low-power positioning.

Thus, according to the Notice No. 2022-75, the portable wireless devices both for mobile service and relating to it, must meet the following requirements:

  • Should have opportunity to operate on the 6.0-8.8 GHz band
  • Do not emit unauthorized radio waves
  • Once the communication starts with the use of the gadget, it should stop radio wave emission by default within 10 seconds if there is no any transmit or receiving data
  • Gadgets must be equipped with functionality that allows stopping radio emission in air transportable vehicle as well as in water craft
  • Wireless devices that intended to be paired with wireless portable devices must emit radio waves only on a demand basis
  • “Do not use on airplanes or ships” notice must be indicated in the documents accompanying the device
