New York State Issues Additional Requirements for Some Seasonal and Decorative Lighting Products

New legislative act regarding seasonal and decorative lighting products was signed on November 30, 2021 In New York State. According to the act, seasonal and decorative lighting products that contain an electrical cord casing with more than 100ppm lead, should be accompanied by the warning label.

The term "seasonal and decorative lighting products" means portable, plug-connected, temporary-use lighting product and accessories that have a nominal 120-volt input voltage rating, such as wired holiday string lights, electrical candles, etc.

Thus, manufacturers of seasonal and decorative lighting products containing lead would be able to sale or put such products to the NY market only if it contains the warning label with the following information:

"WARNING: Handling the coated electrical wire of this product may expose you to lead, wash hands thoroughly after use."

Otherwise, the civil penalty of not more than one thousand dollars for each violation can be charged.

These actions derived from the studies against the wipe test requirements that showed potentially unsafe levels of lead in some decorative and seasonal holiday lights. Thus, to protect humans health and prevent serious health problems, the NY government issued the act, which is going to become effective from February 28, 2022.
