Israel Makes Final Steps Towards National Reform on Import of Electrical Appliances

The Israeli Minister of Energy and Infrastructure (MoE) is planning to change the national regulations for energy-efficient electrical appliances imported into the country. The idea is to align Israel's regulations with those of Europe. The process began on September 1, 2022, when the government initiated reforms for the import of electrical appliances. These reforms apply to various appliances, including:

  • air conditioners
  • refrigerators
  • washing machines
  • clothes dryers
  • dishwashers
  • baking ovens
  • microwave ovens
  • televisions
  • lighting fixtures
  • light bulbs
  • information technology equipment
  • audio equipment

On May 3, 2023, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure took the final step by requesting the Knesset's Economy Committee to adopt the European regulations exclusively for electrical appliance imports, effectively canceling the previous Israeli regulations. This move is expected to reduce the cost of importing appliances and increase competition in the market.

To ease the transition, the government has allowed a one-year adjustment period for imports following the European regulations. During this time, electrical appliances can be marketed in Israel either under the old Israeli regulations or in compliance with the new European rules.

As part of the reform, a new energy rating label has been introduced for electrical appliances imported into Israel based on the European regulations. This label enables consumers to compare the energy performance of different appliance models when making a purchase decision. This way, buyers can make more informed choices about the energy efficiency of the products they are buying.
