India Restricts Import of Drones Under HS Code 8806

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of India published information about drone importation restrictions. These measures were made to promote the domestic production of drones. It is said that drones under HS Code 8806 could not be imported in any form. The exception is given only for units that are imported for R&D or security purposes. However, components for drones are not subject to any approval.

The notification was published on February 9, 2022 and became effective immediately.

Please, note that even when you want to import drones for R&D purpose, you still need to pass clearance procedures properly.

The information has been prepared by the GMA Consult Group team.
