Get Your Electronic Equipment Prepared for New Safety Requirements in Mexico

New updated standard NOM-001-SCFI-2018 applicable to electronic devices was adopted in September 2019. The standard replaces version NOM-001-SCFI-1993 and will become effective on May 15, 2020.

This new standard establishes the characteristics and safety requirements for electronic equipment that is manufactured, imported, and distributed on the territory of the United Mexican States. It focuses on consumer safety of life and health and aims to reduce those risks related to the installed equipment.

This standard applies to electronic equipment and its accessories that are supplied from:

  • a single-phase network with voltage up to 277 V a.c. at 60 Hz  
  • a three-phase supply line with voltages up to 480 V a.c at 60 Hz  
  • other power sources such as batteries and alternative power sources up to 500 V d.c.

NOM-001-SCFI-2018 regulates the following categories of equipment:

 

  • Radio and television receivers  
  • Television screens  
  • Video projectors  
  • Sound and video amplifiers  
  • Players, sound and video recorders  
  • Acoustic boxes with embedded amplifiers  
  • Remote controls  
  • Antenna signal converters and amplifiers  
  • Electronic musical instruments  
  • Electronic accessories such as rhythm generators, tone generators, synthesizers etc.  
  • Video games and video game generating devices that are coupled to a TV or monitors  
  • Electronic toys  
  • Professional electronic equipment such as photo cameras, video cameras        
  • Alarms and video surveillance systems  
  • Communication systems such as walkie talkies  
  • Audio and / or video educational equipment  
  • Multimedia equipment, which is not a data processing equipment or is directly associated with a data processing equipment  
  • Flash card  
  • Microwave ovens

Please, note that the current certificates of conformity issued according to the requirements of NOM-001-SCFI-1993 prior to the new standard comes into force will be effective until the end of their validity period.
