Get Ready for Revision of Plugs and Socket Outlets Performance on Indian Market

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued a new revision of the IS 1293 standard. The IS 1293:2019 “Plugs and Socket Outlets for Household and Similar Purposes of Rated Voltage up to and Including 250 V and Rated Current up to and Including 16 A — Specification” will revise the previous version IS 1293:2005.

This new standard should be used for plugs and fixed or portable socket outlets that meet the following conditions:

  1. AC only
  2. rated voltage not exceeding 250 V
  3. rated current not exceeding 16 A
  4. intended for household and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors

It can be applied to such plugs and socket outlets that are:

  • singular units
  • incorporated in cord sets
  • incorporated in cord extension sets
  • component of the device

This standard does not apply to plugs and fixed or portable socket outlets:

  • for industrial purposes
  • that are appliance couplers
  • for extra low voltage (ELV)
  • for fixed socket outlets combined with fuses, automatic switches, etc.

It was planned that the new revision would come into force from July 25,2020. However, COVID-19 pandemic situation led the BIS to postpone the implementation date.

Thus, IS 1293: 2019 will become effective from October 23, 2020. It means that starting from this date it will not be possible to register the product under the IS 1293:2005 requirements.
