European Union Updates Energy Label Requirements for Light Sources

The GMA Consult Group reminds our subscribers about changes in ecodesign requirements and energy labelling for light sources and separate control gears starting from September 1, 2021.

Thus, for now light sources and separate control gears are subject to:

  • Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2020 of 1 October 2019 as regards to ecodesign requirements for light sources and separate control gears
  • Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2015 of 11 March 2019 as for energy labeling of light sources
  • Directive 2009/125/EC of 21 October 2009 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products
  • Regulation (EU) 2017/1369 of 4 July 2017 setting a framework for energy labelling

From September 1, the energy label, should contain the following information:

  • supplier’s name or trademark
  • supplier’s model identifier
  • scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G
  • energy consumption of the light source in on-mode
  • QR-code
  • energy efficiency class
  • number of the Regulation ‘2019/2015’

The label can be not only of the standard size (at least 36 mm wide and 75 mm high) but of the small size (from 20 mm to 36 mm wide and 54 mm high) as below:

Please, note, that the format of the label can be larger. However, its proportions must be appropriate in any case.

Apart from colored labels, the EU commission worked out the monochrome version. However, the EU Commission notifies that it is possible to use the monochrome only if all information is printed on the package in monochrome.

Keep in mind that when a product is supplied together with a light source as an integral part of the product, the information on the energy efficiency class of the light source must be indicated in a user manual or a booklet of instructions for the product

The Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2015 also contains provisions on information that must be provided when the light source is for sale in an online shop. The energy label shall be displayed close to the price of the product. The size of the label must allow the customer to see it clearly.
