The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union promulgated Directive (EU) 2022/2380 amending Directive 2014/53/EU on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment. The Directive (EU) 2022/2380 was developed to solve such problems as absence of harmonisation of the charging interfaces and charging communication protocols in the Member States’ legislation, the lack of interoperability between radio equipment and charging devices that require regulation at Union level. It is expected that the new Directive becomes effective from December 27, 2022. However, it is given the preparatory stage up to December 23, 2023 for Member States to prepare all the necessary laws and regulations to show compliance to the Directive.
Key amendments cover the following:
- USB type C charging port should meet the standard requirements.
- Requirements to indicate information on specifications relating to charging capabilities and the compatible charging devices
- Provisions about the option for the consumer to obtain a device without the charger.
Manufacturers of radio equipment should remember that provisions of new Directive become mandatory in two steps.
The first phase starts on December 28, 2024. From this date, the following categories of products must meet the provisions of the Directive:
The second phase starts from April 28, 2026 for laptops.
