European Union Consider Regulation of Toys Sold via Online Platforms

Toy Industries of Europe (TIE) consists of national trade associations of the EU Member States, European Economic Area Member States and Switzerland and companies with a registered office in Europe and involved in the manufacturing, marketing and selling process with regards to toys, games, etc.

The TIE carried out monitoring of some well-known e-commerce websites where they bought toys for testing them against the EU safety requirements. The results were dismaying:

Currently, the EU Rules don’t clearly specify the requirements with regards to online marketplaces that make unfair sellers distribute unsafe products via online platforms.

Recently, European Parliament voted on the Digital Services Act (DSA) that will help to control this kind of marketplaces and hold liable for selling the unsafe products via standards for regulating online platforms.

According to the new Rules, they want to realize the principle of “what is illegal offline is also illegal online” to protect the consumer. The new Rules will also help to find bubble companies and stop their services on the platform.

The TIE hopes that new Rules will oblige platforms to check sellers and collect verified contact information to prevent the sale of non-compliant products at online platforms and thus, prevent consumers from buying unsafe toys.
