EU Implements Revised Energy Efficiency Requirements for Refrigerating Appliances

The EU Commission issued two Commission Regulations concerning refrigerating appliances.

The first one is the Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2019 of October 2019. The Regulation relates to ecodesign requirements for refrigerating appliances. It revokes the Commission Regulation (EC) No 643/2009 “On implementing Directive 2005/32/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to ecodesign requirements for household refrigerating appliances”

The Regulation (EU) 2019/2019 became effective from March 1, 2021. It contains ecodesign requirements for electric mains-operated refrigerating appliances with a total volume of more than 10 liters and less than or equal to 1 500 liters. Thus, when you want to place these refrigerating appliances to the EU market you should follow the requirements of this Regulation.

The Commission Regulation 2019/2019 contains four types of the ecodesign requirements:

  • Energy efficiency requirements
  • Functional requirements
  • Resource efficiency requirements
  • Information requirements

With regard to energy efficiency requirements, please note that the values of the maximum energy efficiency index (EEI) of refrigerating appliances that are effective as of March 2021 will be changed from March 2024 as the follows:

Some functional requirements will not be applicable to combi-appliances with one electromechanical thermostat and one compressor which are not equipped with an electronic control board up to March 1, 2024. Among them are the following:

  • Any fast freeze facility should have a function that automatically reverts to the previous normal storage conditions after no more than 72 hours
  • Winter settings should maintain the frozen chamber(s) at the correct temperature automatically

The second one is the Commission Regulation 2019/2016 on energy labelling of refrigerating appliances. It repealed the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) №1060/2010 on implementing Directive 2010/30/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to energy labelling of household refrigerating appliances. It establishes energy efficiency classes and energy labelling for refrigerating appliances:

The label should have the following design:

Label for refrigeration appliances, except for wine storage appliances

Label for wine storage appliances
