Canada Updates Information Technology Equipment Standard

The Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (ISED) issued the updated version of the Information and Technology Equipment standard ICES-003. This is the seventh revision of the standard that was published on October 15, 2020.

The main changes that were made relates to the following:

  • Phrase “Limits and Methods of Measurement to Information Technology Equipment” was removed from the title of the standard. Now the standard is termed as “Information Technology Equipment (Including Digital Apparatus)”;
  • Products that have wireless power transfer functionality became subject of both ICES-003 standard and  RSS-216 “Wireless Power Transfer Devices” standard;
  • The list of exemptions from the scope of ICES-003 was specified and clarified;
  • ICES-003 rev 7 now contains only reference to the ICES-Gen “General Requirements for Compliance of Interference-Causing Equipment” with regards to requirements that must be met. It means that product subject to ICES-003 revision 7 must also follow the requirements specified in the ICES-Gen;
  • According to the administrative requirements now it is necessary to indicate in the test report the chosen measurement procedure (CAN/CSA-CISPR 32:17 or ANSI C63.4);
  • Labeling requirements now indicated in the ICES-Gen only. In the ICES-003 standard you can find just an example.

Please, note that the ISED gives the transition period of one year. During this period the relevant product may comply with either ICES-003 revision 6 or ICES-003 revision 7 requirements. However, after October 15, 2021 all products subject to ICES-003 must comply only with revision 7 of the standard to get access to the market of Canada.
