Brazil Approves New Regulation on Infant Walkers

National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro) published the Consolidated Regulation for infant walkers. The Regulation consists of the Technical Quality Regulation, Conformity Assessment Requirements, and Specifications for the Conformity Identification Seal.

Please, note that baby walkers for therapeutic and curative purposes and the products that a child uses pushing, in the standing position, are out of the scope of the Regulation.

The Technical Quality Regulation specifies the requirements of mandatory compliance with regard to the safety of the product.

Conformity Assessment Requirements contain the criteria and procedures for assessing compliance of infant walkers through the certification mechanism and aimed at preventing accidents during the use of the walkers.

The supplier is totally responsible for the safety of the product regardless of the fact that the product is certified.

Once the certificate is granted, infant walkers must be registered with Inmetro. Only when the product is registered, it can bear the Conformity Identification Seal. The infant walkers can be put on the Brazilian market only after the seal is put on the product. It cannot be affixed to accessories or removable parts of the product.

The Regulation became effective on April 1, 2021 and terminated Inmetro Ordinance 42/2018. Please, note that certified infant walkers must be re-assessed against new Regulation requirements.
