In Australia, requirements for children’s nightwear are regulated by Consumer Goods (Children’s Nightwear and limited Daywear and Paper Patterns for Children’s Nightwear) Safety Standard 2017. The standard sets out the mandatory requirements for children's nightwear and applies to nightwear for children (sizes 00–14) including pyjamas, predominantly knitted all-in-one garments, nightdresses and nighties, nightshirts, dressing gowns, bathrobes and also covers paper patterns for making children's nightwear.
The mandatory standard specifies testing to ensure that nightwear for children meet requirements for fire hazards. During the test, they check the appropriate fire hazard category of the fabric type (from category 1 to category 4) and determine whether the fabric trims meet certain requirements under the different fire hazard categories or not.
Up to December 31, 2019, suppliers have the option to comply with the requirements of either the Consumer Goods (Children’s Nightwear and limited daywear and Paper Patterns for Children’s Nightwear) Safety Standard 2017 or the Trade Practices (Consumer Product Safety Standards (Children’s Nightwear and Paper Patterns for Children’s Nightwear)) Regulations 2007.
From January 1, 2020, suppliers must comply only with the requirements of Consumer Goods (Children’s Nightwear and limited daywear and Paper Patterns for Children’s Nightwear) Safety Standard 2017.
We would like to remind you that from January 1, 2020 a retail packaging of a paper pattern must have a clear and legible warning about the flammability of some fabrics and nightdress styles. The wording of the warning should be as follows:
FIRE WARNING
The sign must be at least 2 millimetres high; and the “FIRE WARNING” text must be bold and upper-case.
