The Minister for Housing and Assistant Treasurer of Australia issued two new standards for toys:
The Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020 was registered on June 11, 2020. It is applicable to new projectile toys that are designed or clearly intended for children under 14 and capable of launching a projectile.
This standard replaces the Consumer Protection Notice No. 16 of 2010 (Consumer Product Safety Standard for Children’s Projectile Toys).
According to the new standard requirements, toys should comply with the relevant voluntary Australian/New Zealand standard or with the following standards:
Although, the Consumer Protection Notice No. 16 of 2010 is no longer in force, the goods still can meet the requirements of this Note within a transition period of 12 months starting from the day of the new standards registration.
Thus, up to June 11, 2021 both the standard and the Notice requirements can be used to show the compliance of safety requirements. After this date, only Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020 is applicable.
The Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020 was registered on June 11, 2020. It is applicable to aquatic toys that are used to bear the mass of a child under the age of 14 and for use in play in shallow water by a child.
The standard does not applicable to:
- beach balls
- surfboards
- bodyboards
- kickboards
- inflatable air beds
- inflatable boats that are not toys or intended for use in deep water
This standard replaces the Consumer Protection Notice No. 2 of 2009 – Consumer Product Safety Standard: Flotation Toys and Aquatic Toys.
According to the new standard requirements, toys should comply with one of the following standards:
Although, the Consumer Protection Notice No. 2 of 2009 is no longer in force, the goods still can meet the requirements of this Note within a transition period of 24 months starting from the day of the new standards registration.
Thus, up to June 11, 2022 both the standard and the Notice requirements can be used to show the compliance of safety requirements. After this date, only Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020 is applicable.
